01

Demographic Shift

Belgium is undergoing a remarkable demographic shift, represented by a growing share of senior citizens. According to Statbel, Belgium's statistical office, the population aged 65 and over has increased from 16% in 2000 to over 20% in 2023. As indicated, by 2050, projections indicate that one in four Belgians will be 65 or older (Statbel, 2023).

02

Care Infrastructure

The number of beds in the elderly care facilities in Belgium is just under 150.000, this means 65 beds for every 1.000 people aged 65 years or older. This ratio is regionally variable (around 60 beds in Flanders, 70 in Wallonia and 104 in Brussels (Healthy Belgium, 2023)).

03

Life Expectancy

Another factor contributing to the increasing demand for elderly care services is increased life expectancy. In 2023, people in Belgium lived an average of 82.5 years (Statbel, 2023). The increase in life expectancies for women in blue and men in orange in the coming years, this will result in a higher demand for elderly care, particularly for those with chronic conditions and reduced mobility.

04

Care workers shortage & waiting times

According to the Belgian Federal Public Service for Employment, Labor, and Social Dialogue (2024), there was a lack of approximately 18.000 healthcare professionals in Belgium in 2023. Projections estimate that this amount will increase to over 25.000 by 2030. The lack of healthcare professionals affects elderly care services.

Nursing home costs

Increasing nursing home costs have become a concern for many seniors and their families in Belgium. In 2024 Solidaris did a study that points out that the average monthly cost in a great number of Belgian nursing homes exceeds €2.000. Some private facilities experienced a 50% increase between 2014 and 2023 (Brussels Times, 2024). These rising prices are worrying compared to pension incomes.
